Kathmandu - Sathsathai, a social organization dedicated to addressing climate change and promoting women's empowerment, is set to celebrate International Women's Day 2024 at Kalapathar in the Mount Everest region.
A delegation of esteemed women representing various sectors of society will undertake a symbolic walk to raise awareness among national and international entities regarding the challenges posed by climate change in the Everest region and the hardships faced by Himalayan communities.
Chairperson Prajeeta Karki revealed plans for a trek from Lukla to Kalapathar, during which they will engage with local representatives and communities to discuss the impacts of climate change.
Chairperson Karki emphasized, "For the past three years, we have drawn attention to national and international stakeholders by ascending Kalapattar, standing at 18,519 feet, under the banner 'Women United for Climate Justice' on International Women's Day. This year, too, we will collaborate with experts and stakeholders to address the issues faced by communities residing at the foothills when the mountains undergo glacial melting due to climate change, and explore potential solutions."
Chairperson Karki further announced that on 29th February, 25 women in leadership roles across various sectors will depart from Kathmandu for Lukla. They will conduct an interaction program with local representatives and communities in Syangboche on 2nd March, advocating for 'Empowering Women for Climate Action: Bridging Governments and communities for Climate Justice'.
"After the Syangboche program," she added, "we will proceed to Kalapathar on March 8th, leveraging the occasion to shed light on the impacts of mountain melting on communities, as well as its repercussions on agriculture and tourism sectors, to both national and international audiences."
Previously, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Syangboche in Solukhumbu, highlighting the global significance of mountain melting. The United Nations is observing International Women's Day 2024 under the theme 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress'.
