Addressing COP-28, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda emphasized his stance on advocating for the justice of innocent people amidst the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.
During his speech at the United Nations Climate Conference COP-28 held in Dubai, Prime Minister Prachanda highlighted the severe impact of climate-related disasters on Nepal's populace. He strongly voiced his concerns, stating, "Our people have suffered greatly due to climate-related calamities. This injustice must cease immediately. I stand here to seek climate justice for my innocent people."
Affirming Nepal's unwavering commitment to the Paris Agreement, Prachanda emphasized the nation's dedication to achieving Net Zero by 2045 and emphasized efforts in harnessing hydropower for clean energy.
The Prime Minister underscored the mounting pressure on mountainous regions due to rising temperatures linked to climate change and stressed the imperative to protect these vital landscapes. Citing the IPCC report, he lamented the loss of one-third of mountain snow and warned of the potential loss of another third by the century's end. He termed this a wakeup call, emphasizing the critical role of mountains in human civilization, biodiversity, and global ecosystem services.
Highlighting mountains as crucial sources of clean water for over 1.69 billion people residing in their foothills, Prachanda recalled the United Nations Secretary-General's plea to halt the war against nature, cautioning against the detrimental impacts of shortsighted pursuits.
In his capacity as the president of LDC countries, Prime Minister Prachanda emphasized the disproportionate impact of climate change on these nations, stressing their urgent need for financial and technical support. He urged developed countries and the global community to provide predictable and fair resources and technology to underdeveloped nations. Additionally, he advocated for subsidies to assist least developed countries in tackling the climate crisis.
