Kathmandu: In an effort to raise awareness about the local impacts of climate change-induced mountain melting, a team of 25 women from various fields embarked on a trek to Kalapathar. Mingma Chiri Sherpa, Chairman of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu, extended a heartfelt welcome to the team.
Chairman Sherpa greeted the diverse team, which includes Nayla Nasir Ahmed Albaloushi, the UAE's pioneering female climber of Mount Everest, alongside chairperson of Sathsathai Prajeeta Karki and Arab women Ahlam Rashed Essa Juma Albaloushi and Ms. Shaima Ahmed Emad Alkamaila.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Nayla, the UAE's first female Mt. Everest climber, lauded the initiative led by women to spotlight climate justice on a global scale. She emphasized the remarkable leadership of women in this endeavor and pledged continued cooperation in the future, inspiring women worldwide to unite for climate justice.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, Rural Municipality chair Sherpa commended the team's dedication, acknowledging the challenges they have overcome. He expressed hope that their efforts would inspire broader discussions on climate change beyond Kathmandu.
Chairperson Karki expressed gratitude to Chairman Sherpa for the municipality's support over the past three years, during which the team has been advocating for climate change awareness, women's empowerment, and tourism promotion in the Everest region. She highlighted the recent warning from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the dire consequences of mountain melting, further strengthening the call for climate justice.
With the slogan 'Women United for Climate Justice', Sathsathai plans for a global call for climate justice from the top at Kalapathar on March 8. This initiative aims to draw global attention to the impact of mountain melting on local communities. The United Nations, celebrating International Women's Day under the theme 'Invest in women: Accelerate progress,' echoes the significance of such endeavors."
