Kathmandu, October 12. At least 45 houses have been completely destroyed and 27 others partially damaged by a flash flood in the Budhi Gandaki River in northern Gorkha. Five people remain missing as search, rescue and relief operations continue in the affected areas.
The flood struck early Sunday morning, October 11, affecting settlements in Chumnubri and Dharche rural municipalities. The affected areas include Paiyu, Bagar, Jagat, Salleri, Dobhan and Ghattikhola, where homes and other infrastructure were damaged or swept away.
The flash flood is believed to have been triggered by a landslide near Chumchet that temporarily blocked the river. When the blockage gave way, a sudden surge of water carrying mud, rocks and debris swept downstream, damaging settlements and infrastructure along the river.
The disaster damaged several bridges and three hydropower project sites, disrupting transportation and access to affected communities. Roads, power infrastructure and communication facilities were also affected, making it difficult to reach some remote settlements.
According to the latest available information, 95 people, including nine foreign nationals, have been moved to safer locations. The Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel are involved in rescue operations and the delivery of relief supplies. Helicopters are being used to reach remote areas that are difficult to access by road.
Authorities have urged residents living along the Budhi Gandaki River and downstream areas to move to safer locations. Alerts have also been issued for settlements along the Trishuli and Narayani river systems because of the risk of rising water levels.
No deaths had been confirmed in the available updates as of October 12. However, five people remain missing, and authorities are continuing search operations and assessing the full extent of the damage. Residents have been advised to stay away from riverbanks and follow official safety instructions.
