Kathmandu : Today marks the celebration of the 114th International Women's Day, marked by a myriad of events worldwide. Since its inception in March 8, 1910, as part of the modern world women's movement, International Women's Day has annually commemorated the rights of working women.
For over a century, this day has served as a platform advocating for women's rights, empowerment, and gender equality. Its roots trace back to March 1908 when 15,000 women marched in New York City, demanding improved working conditions, fair wages, and suffrage. Subsequently, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women's Day in the following year.
In 1910, Clara Zetkin, a prominent figure in the women's liberation movement, proposed the idea of establishing International Women's Day. The inaugural celebration took place in 1911 across Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland. However, it wasn't until 1975 when the United Nations officially recognized and began commemorating this day.
Acknowledged by the UN as an annual event within the labor movement, International Women's Day serves as a platform to advocate for gender equality, the creation of a fair and just society, and the full protection and empowerment of women and girls. This year's celebrations, under the national slogan "Investing in Women: The Beginning of a Civilized and Advanced Society," aim to amplify voices on women's rights, empowerment, participation, discrimination, and inequality through rallies, processions, and various awareness programs.

Former President Bhandari emphasized Nepal's significant strides in women's rights and gender equality, attributing these achievements to various awareness campaigns and movements for social justice. She urged continued efforts to combat social ills and violence against women, emphasizing the importance of equality and empowerment.
Speaker Ghimire echoed these sentiments, highlighting the establishment of women's political rights as a crucial milestone in the journey towards equality. He emphasized the importance of positive thoughts, strong will, and commitment to women's empowerment.
